Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri is an alternative route to Everest Base Camp for trekkers who want to avoid the uncertainty of Lukla flights at the beginning of the journey. Instead of flying directly to Lukla, this trek starts with a scenic road drive from Kathmandu to Salleri and continues through the lower Solu region before joining the main Everest trail near Phakding and Namche Bazaar.

This route offers a quieter and more gradual approach to the Everest region. The early walking days pass through rural villages, forest trails, terraced hillsides, monasteries, and Sherpa settlements before reaching the busier Khumbu trail.

Compared with the regular Everest Base Camp Trek, the Salleri route takes more time but gives a deeper experience of the lower Everest region. It is a good choice for trekkers who prefer road access, quieter trails, lower trip cost, and a more traditional journey toward Everest Base Camp.

The trek still reaches the same major highlights, including Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, Gorakshep, Everest Base Camp, and Kala Patthar. The main difference is the starting approach, which replaces the Lukla flight at the beginning with an overland journey through the lower Everest region.

Travelers looking for the classic Everest route with a direct Lukla flight can also explore our Everest Base Camp Trek itinerary.

What to Expect During the Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri

The Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri is a rewarding journey that combines road travel, lower hill trekking, Sherpa culture, and high Himalayan scenery. The trek begins with a long drive from Kathmandu to Salleri before gradually entering the Everest region on foot.

Compared with the regular Lukla route, the lower Solu section feels quieter and less crowded. The trail passes through forests, villages, suspension bridges, monasteries, and terraced farmland before joining the main Everest Base Camp trail near Phakding.

As the altitude increases, teahouses become more basic, and walking naturally becomes slower due to thinner air and colder temperatures. Services such as hot showers, charging, and Wi-Fi are available in many villages but may cost extra at higher elevations.

Throughout the journey, trekkers can enjoy views of mountains such as Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Makalu, Thamserku, Lobuche Peak, and Pumori. The trail inside Sagarmatha National Park also offers opportunities to see Himalayan wildlife, forests, and traditional Sherpa culture along the route.

What are the Difficulties and Challenges during EBC Salleri trek?

The Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri is considered a moderate to challenging trek. The difficulty mainly comes from long walking days, changing terrain, and high altitude rather than technical climbing.

The first section from Salleri includes forest trails, village paths, steep ascents, and descents before joining the main Everest Base Camp trail. After Namche Bazaar, altitude becomes the main challenge as oxygen levels gradually decrease.

Trekkers should expect to walk around 5 to 7 hours per day on average. Higher sections near Dingboche, Lobuche, Gorakshep, Everest Base Camp, and Kala Patthar feel more demanding because of thinner air, colder temperatures, and rocky terrain.

With proper preparation, acclimatization, and a steady pace, this trek is achievable for fit beginners and experienced trekkers.

                                Good to Know

Best Season to Trek Salleri Everest Base Camp

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are considered the best seasons for the Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri. During spring, temperatures are generally mild, forests bloom with rhododendrons, and mountain visibility is often very clear. Autumn brings stable weather, dry trails, crisp air, and excellent Himalayan views after the monsoon season.

Travelers who want to see Mount Everest without trekking can also explore the Everest Mountain Flight experience from Kathmandu.

During the spring the weather is mild, between 10-20 degree celsius, and the trails are bright with blooming rhododendrons. The clear skies are clear making mountain views more stunning. Autumn is another great season. The weather is dry and stable, with temperatures from 8-18 degree celsius. The views of mountains are sharp and clear, you might also get to enjoy Nepal’s biggest festivals, Dashain and Tihar.

Monsoon season is not an ideal time to trek. Heavy rain makes the trails muddy and slippery, with higher risk of landslides and leeches. Winter can also be suitable for experienced trekkers who are prepared for colder temperatures and possible snow at higher elevations. It’s only a good option if you stick to lower trails and have proper gear. While trekking during these seasons hiring an experienced guide is highly recommended.

Food During the Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri

Teahouses along the Everest trail provide a variety of meals suitable for trekking. You can find Nepali, Tibetan, and basic international dishes such as rice, noodles, soups, pasta, eggs, potatoes, bread, and fried rice throughout the route.

Dal Bhat, a traditional Nepali meal with rice, lentils, vegetables, and curry, is one of the most popular choices because it is filling and energy-rich for long trekking days.

Breakfast usually includes porridge, eggs, toast, pancakes, tea, or coffee. As you move to higher altitude, food prices gradually increase because supplies are transported by porters, yaks, or mules.

Most teahouses prepare meals fresh each day, and vegetarian options are widely available along the trail.

Accommodation During the Trek to EBC via Salleri

Accommodation during the trek is in locally operated teahouses along the route. Rooms are generally simple, clean, and twin-sharing, with basic beds, blankets, and shared dining areas.

In lower villages such as Namche Bazaar, some lodges offer attached bathrooms, hot showers, Wi-Fi, and charging facilities for an additional cost. As the altitude increases beyond Tengboche and Dingboche, accommodation becomes more basic and temperatures become colder.

Dining halls are usually heated in the evenings and provide a comfortable place for trekkers to rest and socialize after walking days.

Transportation for the Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri

The trek begins with an overland drive from Kathmandu to Salleri, which usually takes around 9 to 10 hours depending on road conditions and traffic. Private jeep and local vehicle options are available.

From Salleri, the journey continues on foot through the lower Solu region before joining the main Everest Base Camp trail. Porters and pack animals such as yaks and mules are commonly used to transport supplies and trekking equipment in higher areas.

Most trekkers return by flight from Lukla to Kathmandu after completing the trek. Weather conditions in the Everest region can occasionally affect Lukla flight schedules, so keeping one or two extra buffer days is recommended.

Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri FAQs

                                • Q1. Is Everest Base Camp Trek via Salleri better than flying to Lukla?

The Salleri route is a good option for trekkers who want to avoid possible Lukla flight delays at the beginning of the journey. It also offers a quieter and more gradual approach through the lower Solu region before joining the main Everest Base Camp trail.

                                • The drive from Kathmandu to Salleri usually takes around 9 to 10 hours depending on road and traffic conditions. Private jeep and local vehicle options are available.

                                • Yes, most trekkers return by flight from Lukla to Kathmandu after completing the Everest Base Camp trek. This helps reduce overall trekking duration compared to returning to Salleri on foot.

                                • Yes, the lower Solu section between Salleri and Phakding is generally quieter and less crowded than the standard Lukla route. The trail becomes busier after joining the main Everest Base Camp trail near Namche Bazaar.

                                • Trekkers need:

                                  • Sagarmatha National Park Permit
