Langtang Gosainkunda trek in Nepal is moderately difficult trek that takes you through lush forests, charming villages and high altitude passes. It is one of the less crowed trekking route in Nepal. This trekking route provides you with an awe-inspiring views of snowy mountains, dense forests, traditional Tamang Villages, and a sacred lake at the evaluation of 4,380 meters.

The trek to Langtang Gosainkunda takes 13 days to complete. This trek is a perfect choice for beginner as well as experienced trekkers with a moderate level of fitness. The best time to Trek the Langtang Gosainkunda route is during Spring (May-March) and Autumn (September- November). Weather conditions and temperature are perfect during these two seasons. These seasons offer stunning views, clear, skies, and a great visibility for trekking. Let’s discuss briefly about season and possibility of trekking during those period:

Spring (May-March)

Spring offers one of the best time throughout the year. The days are warm and nights are cool, clear skies, and low or occasional chance of rain. You will see beautiful rhododendrons and other wild flowers blooming all over the trail. Activities like birdwatching and wildlife spotting is famous during this season. 

The conditions of trekking trail are good whereas there might be light snow at higher evaluations during early spring. Although this is also famous trekking season, it is less crowed compared to autumn.

Autumn (September-November)

Autumn is the perfect time to trek the Langtang Gosainkunda in Nepal as it offers pleasant and stable weather conditions with mild daytime temperature and cooler nights. The skies during this season are clear and wonderful mountain views can be seen. It is easier and safer to trek during this season as the trekking trails are dry and well maintained. 

Autumn is a festive season with major nepali festivals like Dashain and Tihar which offers a chance to experience local cultures and traditions. As this is most famous trekking season, it is crowded in tea house and trekking way.

Note: Avoid trekking during monsoon and Winter seasons as these seasons provide poor trail conditions due to heavy rain and snowfall. It is extremely cold at higher altitudes during winter and trekking path are also slippery due to snowfall. You might not find good place to accommodate as many tea houses are closed during this seasons due to fewer crowds and cold weather. 

Whereas Monsoon offers heavy rainfall, leeches, mosquitoes, slippery trails and unclear mountain views. This season is not an ideal for trekking as various natural disasters like floods and landslides make trekking risky. So, it is best to avoid winter and monsoon season and choose autumn and spring for your journeys to Himalayas.

What are the difficulties during the Langtang Gosainkunda Excursion?

The Langtang Gosainkunda Trekking is a moderately difficult trip in Nepal. Trekkers must be prepared for all types of possible difficulties. Some of the challenges/difficulties during the trek are given below:

Altitude: While trekking to the Langtang Gosainkunda you will have to trek to high altitudes. You will have to trek to the altitude of 4,610 meters which can cause an altitude sickness. As you climb higher you might start feeling nausea, dizzy, headache etc. These are the symptoms of altitude sickness. It might be very challenging to trek in the higher altitude as you might even feel out of breath due to lack of oxygen.

Weather: The weather condition as higher altitudes can be unpredictable most of the time. It might suddenly rain or snow with strong and heavy winds making it challenging to keep up trekking. The weather during the night time might be very cold and freezing. So changing weather condition is one of the challenging part during the Langtang Gosainkunda trek.  

Remoteness: This is the least popular trekking region in Nepal. The Langtang region is remote due to its geographical condition. Wider roads and well maintained trekking paths are hard to find. You will not get luxuries services while this trek making it challenging to trek in mountainous and remote area.

Terrain: The trekking path to Langtang Gosainkunda has challenging topography. The trekking path is rocky steep and narrower making it extremely difficult during trekking. There is a high chance of falling and causing minor to major injuries during his trek as the trails are bumpy and uneven.

Limited Resources: The resources and service facilities in this trekking route is rare and limited. There are basic tea house providing basic food and accommodation service. You might feel the food are very basic and plain. Medical facilities are also very rare which can be risky during emergency situations.

Language Barrier: Although this region is famous for trekking, many people cannot speak English language which makes it difficult to communicate during trekking. Most of the people in this region speak Nepali and their native language if you want to communicate with locals you must learn some nepali phrases and ask your guide to translate as it can cause misunderstanding.

Physically Demanding: As this trek includes steep ascents and descents while trekking to higher altitude it might be very difficult for you. Climbing and descending requires lots of strength and physical capability. Tiredness and Exhaustion can make you unable to keep going.

Longer Walking Days: While trekking in this route it requires longer walking/ trekking hours. You will have to walk for 6-7 hours almost every day, which is challenging to your mind and body.

Itinerary

Your first day of the Langtang Gosainkunda Trek starts with an early morning drive from Kathmandu by private jeep or local bus. You will travel towards north along the Trishuli river. you will pass through small towns, scenic hills, and terraced farmland while heading towards Syabrubesi. After driving for 7-8 hours you will reach your destination for the day Syabrubesi.

    This is the first day of your walking journey during the trek. You will trek through various thick oak and rhododendron forests, suspension bridges, and along the Bhote Koshi river. You will see various birds and wild animals like Monkeys while passing through the forests. You will reach a small settlement Lama Hotel at the end of the day and rest as well as prepare for the trek next day.

      You will head towards the Langtang village on your third day of the Langtang Gosainkunda excursion. You will see an amazing mountain views while heading towards the Langtang Village. You will also pass through the Ghoda Tabela before reaching Langtang Village. This village was rebuilt after the earthquake in 2015. It will take five to six hours to reach Langtang village from Lama Hotel.

        The fourth day of the trek is all about trekking to Kyanjin Gompa. You will walk through yak pastures and small streams before reaching the Kyanjin Gompa. It will take you 3-4 hours to reach Kyanjin Gompa depending on your pace. Upon arriving the monastery, you can explore the surrounding area and monastery. You will see panoramic views of various mountains from this place.

          You will acclimatize at the Kyanjin Gompa for this day. You can also hike to Tsergo Ri in order to prepare for next day and observr the surrounding area. You can explore the monastery and cultures, interact with locals and taste local yak cheese.

           

            The sixth day of the trek starts with wonderful view of sunrise. You will then trek back to Lama Hotel. You will ascent and descent at various parts of the trek. You will pass through the same villages and forests from the other day admiring and enjoying trekking.

              You will be heading to Thulo Syabru on your 7th fay of the trekking journey. the trail passes through the terraced fields and forests. It will take you five to six hours to reach a lovely tamang village called Thulo Syabru. You can also see an amazing mountain views from this village and explore the culture and traditions of villagers.

                Your destination for the 8th day of Langtang Gosainkunda Hike is Shin Gompa. You will pass through rhododendron and pine forests climbing for 4-5 hours. After reaching at the shin Gompa you can explore surrounding areas and cheese factory. You will accommodate at the tea house in Shin Gompa.

                  You will trek to another destination of your trek on 9th day. You will be heading towards the sacred lake called Gosainkunda. You will see panoramic view of various mountain ranges while trekking to the famous lake. You will reach Gosainkunda after 5-6 hours of walking you will reach Gosainkunda.

                    This day is one of the most adventurous and challenging day of the Langtang Gosainkunda trek. You will trek to Gopte from Gosainkunda passing through the highest point of the trek Laure Binayak Pass. The path while crossing this pass is steep and rocky. You will descent to Gopte and spend a night there.

                      You will be heading towards the peaceful and small village called Kutumbsang. You will walk through dense forest to reach this amazing village. You will occasionally see beautiful mountain views from some open places during trek to Kutumbsang.  Upon arriving at this beautiful village you can finally rest after having tiring day.

                        This is the second last day of your Langtang Gosainkunda Trekking. You will trek to Chisapani village passing through forests, villages, and terraced fields. The hike for this day can be defined moderate as you will have mix of gentle climbs and descents. Upon reaching the village you can rest and enjoy the view of sunset as it is famous for Panoramic sunrise and sunset scenes.

                          On the last day of your trek to Langtang Gosainkunda you will start your journey to Sundarijal. It will take you 4 hours to reach Sundarijal through the Shivapuri National Park. You will catch vehicle to Kathmandu from Sundarijal marking an end to the Langtang Gosainkunda journey.
