Good to Know

Permits and Fees

Before embarking on the trek, you'll need to obtain the required permits. Typically, you will need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) card. Make sure to carry these permits at all times during the trek, as there are checkpoint stations along the way where you might be asked to show them.

Accommodation and Food

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek offers various teahouses and lodges along the trail for accommodation. These teahouses provide basic but comfortable amenities like rooms with twin beds, blankets, and shared bathrooms. However, during peak seasons, it is advisable to book your accommodation in advance to secure a place.
Food options in the teahouses are diverse, ranging from local Nepali dishes like Dal Bhat (rice with lentil soup), momo (dumplings), and noodles to international cuisine. It's recommended to try the local dishes to experience the authentic flavors of the region.

Physical Fitness and Altitude

While the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is considered a moderate trek, it still involves walking for several hours each day, including some uphill and downhill sections. Prior physical fitness preparation, including regular walking or hiking, is beneficial for an enjoyable experience. Moreover, the highest point of the trek, Poon Hill, is at an altitude of 3,210 meters (10,531 feet). Adequate acclimatization is essential to avoid altitude-related issues. Take it slow, stay hydrated, and listen to your body.

Packing List

Some essential items to pack for the trek include:

  • Sturdy and comfortable trekking shoes
  • Lightweight and moisture-wicking clothing (including layers for varying temperatures)
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Hat and gloves
  • Sunglasses with UV protection
  • Water purification tablets or filters
  • Trekking poles (optional but helpful for challenging sections)
  • Basic first aid kit
  • Snacks and energy bars
  • Camera or smartphone for capturing the breathtaking views

Health and Safety

Before embarking on the trek, ensure you are in good health. It is advisable to undergo a medical check-up to confirm your fitness for the trek, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions. Consult with your healthcare provider about altitude-related concerns and take any necessary medications or precautions. Carry a comprehensive first aid kit with essential medications, including those for common ailments like headaches and upset stomachs.

Money and ATMs

While some teahouses and lodges on the trekking route accept credit cards, it's essential to carry enough Nepalese currency (Nepalese Rupees - NPR) in cash. There are ATMs in Pokhara where you can withdraw money before starting the trek, but they might not be available along the trail. Keep small denominations of cash for easy transactions.

Weather and Clothing

The weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, even during the best trekking seasons. It's crucial to be prepared for both warm and cold conditions. Layered clothing is the key, as it allows you to adjust according to the changing temperatures. Make sure to pack a warm down jacket, thermal innerwear, and a waterproof outer layer to stay protected from rain or snow.

Communication

While trekking, you might not have consistent access to the internet or mobile network. However, most teahouses and lodges offer limited Wi-Fi services for a small fee. It's a good idea to inform your family and friends about your trekking itinerary before you start, and update them whenever possible.

Alternative Routes

If you have more time and prefer an extended trekking adventure, there are alternative routes that can be combined with the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. For example, you can opt for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, which takes you deeper into the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary, offering a close-up view of towering peaks like Annapurna I.

    Very flexible, approachable and reliable

My friend and I did a 7 days trek to Poon Hill and surroundings. It was a great experience with a great and experienced guide (Phurba). Just before starting our trekking my friend and I fell sick, and the agency was very understanding, easy to contact and very flexible.

We received a refund and they even booked tickets from Pokhara to Kathmandu for us on request as part of the refund. It's a great company that I can recommend to anyone planning to go to Nepal.
