How to Read the Manaslu Circuit Trek Map
A Manaslu Circuit Trek map is useful for seeing where Machha Khola, Samagaun, Larkya La and Bimthang sit in relation to one another, but the line between those places does not tell you how the trail will feel on foot. When we explain the route to trekkers before leaving Kathmandu, we separate the road approach, the continuous walking trail, acclimatization side trips and the journey out after the trek. We then read altitude and walking time alongside the map rather than judging a trekking day only by the distance between two villages.
The first distinction is Kathmandu to Machha Khola. This is the road approach to the trailhead rather than part of the trekking distance. Older Manaslu maps often show the walking route beginning around Soti Khola, while the itinerary our team currently operates uses Machha Khola as the trekking trailhead. Road access in this region can change with conditions, so the practical starting point should always be checked against the itinerary being used rather than assumed from an older map.
Once walking begins from Machha Khola, the lower route appears on the map to follow the Budhi Gandaki steadily toward Jagat, Deng and Namrung. On foot, that line contains repeated changes in height above the river, suspension-bridge crossings, stone steps and short climbs and descents as the trail works through the valley. The difference between the published elevations of two overnight villages therefore does not represent all of the ascent and descent completed during that day's walk.
Above Namrung, the map needs to be read differently. The distances between Lho, Samagaun, Samdo and Dharmasala become shorter, while sleeping altitude becomes increasingly important. We do not extend these stages simply because a fit trekker could cover more kilometres. The progression is intended to give trekkers time to adjust before moving toward Larkya La, so the altitude of each overnight stop matters as much as the distance printed beside the trail.
Samagaun deserves particular attention on a detailed map because several trails branch away from the village. Birendra Lake, Manaslu Base Camp and Pungyen Gompa are acclimatization or side-trip options rather than three compulsory stops on the route to Samdo. A GPS track that includes a longer Manaslu Base Camp acclimatization hike can therefore show a substantially different total distance from a track recording only the continuous circuit, even though both trekkers followed the same main Manaslu route.
The short map distance between Samdo and Dharmasala should not be interpreted as a missing trekking stage. Dharmasala is the final overnight position before the Larkya La crossing, and reaching it with enough time to rest, eat, organize warm layers and prepare for the early departure is more useful than adding unnecessary distance at this altitude. By this stage of the trek, where the group sleeps and how each trekker is responding to the increasing elevation matter more than maximizing the number of kilometres walked that day.
The section from Dharmasala across Larkya La to Bimthang is where a simple route line becomes least useful for predicting the walking day. Reaching the pass is only part of the crossing; trekkers still have a long descent before arriving at Bimthang. Snow or ice underfoot, wind, temperature, visibility and the pace of individual trekkers can all affect how long the same mapped route takes, which is why we do not treat a published walking time as a guaranteed arrival time.
After crossing Larkya La, follow the map toward Bimthang, Tilje and Dharapani rather than tracing the route back toward the Budhi Gandaki. The trek has crossed the high divide and is now descending toward the Marsyangdi side, eventually meeting the Annapurna Circuit corridor around Dharapani instead of returning along the trail used during the first half of the journey.
The most useful way to read the Manaslu Circuit Trek map is therefore to look at route direction, overnight altitude, side trails and terrain together. The map tells you where the route goes, while daily altitude changes, walking times and current trail conditions explain why two stages that look similar on a map can feel very different once you are actually walking them.
Manaslu Circuit Trek Distance, Altitude and Walking Time by Day
Daily distance on the Manaslu Circuit becomes much more useful when it is read together with sleeping altitude and walking time. In the lower Budhi Gandaki valley, a day can involve considerably more climbing and descending than the difference between the starting and finishing elevations suggests. Higher on the route, particularly from Samagaun onward, the number of kilometres decreases because acclimatization and the next sleeping altitude begin to control the pace of the itinerary.
The table below follows the 12-day Manaslu Circuit route our team currently operates. Distances are approximate trail ranges rather than survey measurements because GPS tracks, temporary trail variations and the exact line recorded through villages can produce different results.

Why Manaslu Circuit Distance Figures Are Not Always the Same
You will find different kilometre figures for the same Manaslu stages on trekking maps, GPS tracks and operator websites. This does not necessarily mean that one trekker is following a completely different trail. Measurements can change according to the GPS or mapping platform used, the exact route recorded through settlements, temporary trail diversions and whether movements around overnight villages are included.
The starting and finishing points make an even larger difference to the total. Older Manaslu distance calculations may include walking from Soti Khola, while our current itinerary begins the trekking section at Machha Khola. Some published totals finish at Dharapani, while others continue counting road sections or additional walking farther toward Besisahar. Acclimatization hikes can add another substantial difference.
For this reason, we would not tell a trekker that every Manaslu Circuit is exactly one fixed number of kilometres. The route being measured needs to be defined first.
Why the Shortest Days Are Higher on the Route
The change from approximately full-day walking stages lower in the valley to shorter stages around Samagaun, Samdo and Dharmasala is deliberate. By the time trekkers reach Samdo, the sleeping altitude is approaching 3,900 metres, and Dharmasala is considerably higher again. Continuing farther simply because only a few kilometres have been walked would work against the acclimatization structure of the itinerary.
This is particularly important on Samdo to Dharmasala. The stage may look unusually short beside the lower-valley days, but Dharmasala is positioned for the following morning's Larkya La crossing. We prefer trekkers to arrive with time to recover, eat properly, organize their layers and equipment, and prepare for an early departure rather than turn the day before the pass into another long walking stage.
The following day demonstrates why kilometres alone are a poor measure of trekking difficulty. Dharmasala to Bimthang via Larkya La combines the climb toward the highest point of the circuit with a long descent on the opposite side. Snow or ice, wind, visibility, temperature and the pace of the group can all affect the time required, even though the route shown on the map has not changed.
How Should You Use These Distances?
Use the distances as a planning range, not as a target that has to appear exactly on your GPS watch at the end of the day. Walking time, sleeping altitude, accumulated ascent and descent, trail conditions and acclimatization provide a better picture of each stage when they are considered together.
The acclimatization days at Samagaun and Samdo are deliberately shown without fixed kilometre totals. A trekker hiking toward Manaslu Base Camp from Samagaun will record a very different distance and elevation gain from somebody taking a shorter acclimatization walk around Birendra Lake, even though both return to Samagaun and continue on the same main circuit afterward.
For our trekking team, the practical question is therefore not simply “How many kilometres do we need to walk today?” It is whether the distance, altitude gain, trail conditions and next overnight elevation make sense together before the group moves farther up the route.
Side Trips from Samagaun on the Manaslu Circuit Map
Samagaun is one of the places where a detailed Manaslu Circuit map needs more explanation than the main route line can provide. The continuous circuit arrives from Lho and later leaves toward Samdo, but several trails branch away from Samagaun toward Birendra Lake, Manaslu Base Camp and Pungyen Gompa. These branches should be read as separate acclimatization or exploration routes rather than additional stages that every trekker follows before continuing to Samdo.
This distinction becomes important when trekkers compare online maps or GPS tracks. A track recorded by somebody who walked toward Manaslu Base Camp during the acclimatization day can be considerably longer and show much more elevation gain than one recorded by a trekker who stayed closer to Samagaun or walked only toward Birendra Lake. Both can still represent the same Manaslu Circuit itinerary because the main route between the overnight villages has not changed.
Samagaun to Birendra Lake
Birendra Lake lies away from the direct trail to Samdo and is normally approached as a separate walk from the Samagaun area. On a map it can appear very close to the village, but the purpose of going there during an acclimatization day is not simply to add kilometres. It gives trekkers an opportunity to move above their sleeping elevation and return to Samagaun while keeping the same overnight altitude.

When marking Birendra Lake on our route map, we would therefore show the trail as a side route returning toward Samagaun, not as the next point on the main circuit. This prevents the common misunderstanding that trekkers must pass the lake while walking from Samagaun to Samdo.
Samagaun to Manaslu Base Camp
The trail toward Manaslu Base Camp is the more substantial side excursion commonly associated with Samagaun. It takes trekkers much higher than the village before returning to the same sleeping location, so the day's distance and elevation gain are very different from those of a shorter acclimatization walk.
We do not treat reaching Manaslu Base Camp as compulsory simply because an itinerary includes an acclimatization day in Samagaun. The decision has to fit the trekker's condition, the weather, the trail underfoot and how well the person is adapting to altitude. Turning an acclimatization day into an unnecessarily exhausting objective can work against the reason the extra day was included in the itinerary.
This is also why Manaslu Base Camp should not be included automatically when calculating the distance of the main Manaslu Circuit. It is an out-and-back side route from the Samagaun area rather than part of the continuous trail toward Samdo.
Where Does Pungyen Gompa Fit on the Map?
Pungyen Gompa is another separate branch from the main circuit, and its position on the map is different from both Birendra Lake and Manaslu Base Camp. Trekkers choosing this direction leave the main route for the Pungyen valley and later return rather than using the gompa as a through-route to Samdo.
That difference matters when reading a map containing all three Samagaun excursions. Birendra Lake, Manaslu Base Camp and Pungyen Gompa are not a single acclimatization loop, and we would not plan to connect all three simply because they appear around the same overnight location on a regional map.
Which Samagaun Side Trip Do We Use?
We do not decide that every trekker must complete the same Samagaun acclimatization walk before the trek has even started. By the time the group reaches Samagaun, our guide has already seen how each person has been walking through the lower valley and how they are responding as the sleeping altitude increases.
For a strong and well-acclimatized trekker in suitable conditions, the higher route toward Manaslu Base Camp may be appropriate. On another day, a shorter movement toward Birendra Lake or a different acclimatization plan may make more sense. Weather, snow, visibility, trail conditions and the trekker's response to altitude can change that decision.
For map purposes, the important distinction is simple: Samagaun to Samdo is the main Manaslu Circuit trail; Birendra Lake, Manaslu Base Camp and Pungyen Gompa are separate side routes. Showing them differently on the map makes the route easier to understand and prevents optional acclimatization kilometres from being mistaken for the fixed distance of the circuit.
Which Direction Do You Walk the Manaslu Circuit?
On the route our team operates, the Manaslu Circuit is walked from Machha Khola up the Budhi Gandaki valley through Samagaun and Samdo, across Larkya La from the Dharmasala side, and down through Bimthang toward Tilje and Dharapani. If you are following the map from the trailhead, the easiest way to understand the direction is not by remembering clockwise or anticlockwise, but by following the sequence of valleys and overnight elevations before the pass.
The direction matters because the two sides of the circuit do not provide the same approach to Larkya La. From Machha Khola, trekkers spend several days gaining altitude through the Budhi Gandaki valley before reaching Namrung, Lho and Samagaun. The itinerary then continues through Samdo and Dharmasala before attempting the pass. Those overnight stops are not simply villages that happen to lie between the trailhead and Larkya La; together they create the altitude progression we use before the highest crossing of the trek.
This is easier to understand when looking at the sleeping elevations on the map. The route does not jump directly from the lower valley to the pass. Trekkers sleep progressively higher through the upper Manaslu settlements, with acclimatization time built into the route before Dharmasala. By the morning of the Larkya La crossing, our guide has also had several days to observe how each trekker is eating, sleeping and walking as the altitude increases.
Why Don't We Normally Walk the Manaslu Circuit in Reverse?
A map can make a reverse crossing look simple because the same line connects Dharapani, Bimthang, Larkya La and Dharmasala. On the ground, reversing the arrows changes how the high section is approached.
Walking from the Bimthang side would mean building an itinerary around the western approach to Larkya La rather than using the gradual sequence of upper Manaslu overnight stops before the pass. The approach, available overnight locations and altitude progression would therefore need to be reconsidered rather than simply taking a standard Manaslu itinerary and reading its days from bottom to top.
This is why we do not reverse the route merely because the trail is physically visible in both directions. A high-altitude circuit has to make sense as a sequence of sleeping elevations and recovery opportunities, not only as a connected line on a map.
Why Does the Route Continue to Bimthang Instead of Returning to Samagaun?
Larkya La is the geographic break that makes the Manaslu route a true crossing rather than an out-and-back trek. Once trekkers cross the pass from the Dharmasala side, the trail descends toward Bimthang on the western side of the range instead of turning around and returning through Samdo and Samagaun.
That distinction is easy to miss when looking at a small Nepal trekking map. The first part of the journey has been tied to the Budhi Gandaki valley, while the route beyond the pass eventually drains toward the Marsyangdi side. The change is therefore not simply that the trail starts descending; trekkers have crossed from one side of the mountain system into another valley corridor.
The descent continues from Bimthang through lower terrain toward Tilje and Dharapani. Around Dharapani, the Manaslu route meets the corridor used by the Annapurna Circuit, which provides the practical exit from the walking section rather than requiring trekkers to retrace the Budhi Gandaki route back to Machha Khola.
How Should You Follow the Direction on the Map?
Instead of relying only on a clockwise or anticlockwise label, follow the route in this order:
Machha Khola → Budhi Gandaki valley → Namrung → Lho → Samagaun → Samdo → Dharmasala → Larkya La → Bimthang → Tilje → Besisahar
The important pattern is visible in the elevations as well as the place names. The route spends several days gaining altitude before the pass, crosses Larkya La only after the upper Manaslu stages have been completed, and then loses substantial elevation on the Bimthang side before continuing toward the road-access corridor.
That is how we use the map when explaining the route to trekkers: not simply to show which direction the arrows point, but to show why the sequence of overnight stops before and after Larkya La matters.
Can You Use Google Maps or GPS on the Manaslu Circuit?
Yes, GPS can be useful on the Manaslu Circuit, especially for checking your position, following your progress between overnight stops and understanding the surrounding terrain. We would still not use Google Maps, an offline trekking app or a downloaded GPX track as the final authority for deciding which path to follow on the ground.
The reason is not simply that mobile coverage becomes unreliable. A digital map records geography, while the route being used by trekkers can change more quickly than the mapping data. Landslides, damaged sections, bridge repairs and temporary local diversions can shift a short part of the walking line without immediately appearing on the map stored on your phone.
This difference is easy to overlook in the Budhi Gandaki valley. A GPS screen may show that you are only a short distance from the recorded trail, but it cannot explain why people are currently using a different crossing or whether the older line is still passable. When the trail visible on a device and the route being used locally do not agree, we would rather confirm the current route than try to force the group back onto an old digital track.
Should You Download an Offline Manaslu Circuit Map?
Yes. If you want to follow the route on your own phone, download the map before leaving Kathmandu rather than waiting until you are already on the trek. An offline map remains useful without mobile data and allows you to see your approximate position in relation to villages, valleys and the next overnight stop.
We see its greatest value as an orientation tool. A trekker can look back after several days and understand how far the route has travelled up the Budhi Gandaki, where the side valleys sit in relation to Samagaun and why the trail changes direction after Larkya La. That geographic context is difficult to appreciate from an itinerary containing only village names and walking hours.
An offline map should not, however, turn every visible path into a trekking option. Around villages and side valleys there are local trails used for farming, livestock, monasteries and movement between settlements that are not necessarily part of the Manaslu Circuit. Seeing a line on a mapping application is different from knowing why that path exists and whether it belongs to the route being used that day.
Can You Follow a GPX Track Around the Manaslu Circuit?
A GPX file is useful for studying the route before the trek and recording where you have travelled, but every downloaded track has a date and a history behind it. It represents the path somebody's device recorded during a particular journey; it does not guarantee that every metre of that line remains the preferred trail when you arrive.
This matters after a monsoon or any period when landslides, river erosion or bridge work have affected the valley. If a locally used section has changed, the sensible response is to confirm the current route rather than assume that an older GPX line must be correct because it appears on the screen.
GPX files can also create confusion when trekkers compare total Manaslu Circuit distances. One person may record every movement around Samagaun, including an acclimatization hike, while another may pause the device at the lodge. Someone else may begin recording only after leaving Machha Khola. Those tracks can produce different kilometre totals without any of the trekkers having followed the wrong main circuit.
What Happens When the Digital Map and the Trail Do Not Match?
This is the situation in which a trekking map becomes a reference rather than a decision-maker.
Our first question would be whether the difference comes from ordinary GPS error, a small local path variation or an actual change in the route. The answer may be obvious from the trail being used, or it may require checking with people who have recently travelled through the section. Information from guides coming in the opposite direction, lodge owners and local residents can be more current than a track downloaded before the trek.
We would not tell a group to leave an obviously used trail merely because a phone shows the GPS marker a few metres away from an older line. Nor would we assume that every new-looking path is a safe alternative. The useful combination is digital orientation plus current information from the ground.
Is Google Maps Enough for the Manaslu Circuit Trek?
No. Google Maps can help with general geographic orientation, but a high-altitude trekking route needs more information than a normal road-and-place map is designed to provide.
For trekkers who want to study the route closely, an offline topographic trekking map or GPS application that shows terrain and elevation is more useful than relying only on Google Maps. Even then, we treat the digital map as another piece of information rather than a substitute for route decisions made on the trail.
There is also a practical limitation that has nothing to do with mapping accuracy: battery life. Continuous GPS recording, frequent screen use and cold temperatures can consume power quickly, while charging becomes less convenient higher on the circuit. Someone planning to record the entire trek should manage phone use accordingly and carry an appropriate backup power source rather than discovering at Dharmasala that the navigation device has become an empty battery.
For our groups, there is no problem with trekkers carrying an offline map, recording their route or checking GPS throughout the journey. In fact, following the track can make the geography of Manaslu much easier to understand. We simply use it for what it does well: showing position, terrain and progress, while current trail information determines what we actually do when conditions on the ground differ from the line stored on the device.
How Does the Manaslu Circuit Connect with Tsum Valley and the Annapurna Circuit?
A detailed Manaslu trekking map often shows more trails than the standard Manaslu Circuit itself. Two of the most important are the route into Tsum Valley on the eastern side of the circuit and the Annapurna Circuit corridor reached around Dharapani after crossing Larkya La. They connect with the Manaslu route in very different ways and should not be mistaken for compulsory sections of the standard circuit.
The Tsum Valley connection occurs during the earlier part of the journey, before the Manaslu route reaches the higher villages around Namrung and Samagaun. Trekkers combining Manaslu with Tsum Valley leave the direct circuit route and spend additional days travelling into Tsum before returning to the Manaslu corridor and continuing toward the upper Budhi Gandaki.

This is important when comparing maps because a Manaslu-Tsum itinerary can look dramatically larger than the standard Manaslu Circuit even though both eventually use many of the same villages on the approach to Larkya La. The additional line into Tsum Valley represents a separate extension rather than a different way of crossing Larkya La.
The Annapurna connection works differently. It appears near the end of the Manaslu Circuit rather than as an out-and-back extension during the first half of the trek. After crossing Larkya La and descending through Bimthang and Tilje, trekkers reach the Dharapani area, where the Manaslu route meets the corridor used by the Annapurna Circuit.
For trekkers finishing the standard Manaslu Circuit, Dharapani is part of the exit from the walking route toward Besisahar and onward transport. For someone combining the two circuits, however, reaching Dharapani can become the transition into the next trekking section rather than the end of the journey.
Where Does the Tsum Valley Route Leave the Manaslu Circuit?
The Tsum Valley trail branches away from the main Manaslu corridor in the lower section of the trek around the Philim-Lokpa area. From there, the Tsum route turns away from the direct progression toward Deng and enters a separate valley system.
On our map, this junction should be visually obvious. The line continuing toward Deng → Namrung → Samagaun is the standard Manaslu Circuit, while the line toward Lokpa and Tsum Valley is an extension.
A trekker following the standard Manaslu Circuit does not need to enter Tsum Valley in order to reach Larkya La. Likewise, seeing Tsum villages on a detailed regional map should not be interpreted as additional overnight stops missing from a shorter Manaslu itinerary.
Where Does the Manaslu Circuit Meet the Annapurna Circuit?
The connection with the Annapurna Circuit occurs around Dharapani, after the Manaslu trekker has already crossed Larkya La and descended through Bimthang and Tilje.
This junction creates two very different possibilities on the same map. A standard Manaslu itinerary uses the Dharapani side as the way out of the trek, while a combined Manaslu–Annapurna itinerary can continue through the Annapurna route instead of ending the walking journey there.
That distinction explains why some maps appear to show the Manaslu Circuit continuing much farther west. The extra trail may belong to an Annapurna Circuit extension, not to the distance of the standard Manaslu Circuit itself.
When comparing Manaslu maps, we therefore separate three lines clearly: the standard Manaslu Circuit, the Tsum Valley extension and the Annapurna Circuit continuation. They share junctions, but they are not interchangeable routes and should not be combined when calculating the distance or duration of a normal Manaslu Circuit trek.
Why Do Manaslu Circuit Trek Maps Look Different?
Two Manaslu Circuit Trek maps can show different starting points, elevations, distances and even slightly different trail lines without necessarily describing different treks. Before using a map for planning, we first check when it was produced, where its walking measurement begins and ends, whether optional side trips are included, and whether road sections have been separated from the trekking trail.
The starting point is often the first difference. Older maps commonly extend the walking route farther down the Budhi Gandaki corridor toward Soti Khola, while the itinerary our team currently uses begins trekking from Machha Khola after the drive from Kathmandu. A map based on an older roadhead can therefore show a longer walking route even though the upper Manaslu section from Jagat toward Larkya La remains familiar.
The finishing point creates similar confusion. Some maps stop the trekking measurement around Dharapani, while others continue farther along the road-access corridor toward Besisahar or include transport sections when describing the overall journey. Before comparing two published total distances, check whether they are actually measuring the same start and finish.
Why Are Village Altitudes Different on Different Manaslu Maps?
Small differences in altitude are common when comparing trekking maps, GPS devices and operator itineraries. Samagaun, Samdo, Dharapani and Larkya La can all appear with slightly different elevations depending on the mapping dataset, GPS reading and the exact point within a settlement or pass area used for the measurement.
For trekking purposes, we do not try to resolve a difference of a few metres by choosing whichever website displays the most precise-looking number. What matters operationally is the altitude progression between overnight stops and how the trekker is responding as the route moves higher.
Larkya La is the clearest example. You will commonly find the pass marked at approximately 5,106 m or 5,160 m, with other GPS readings falling around that range. Those figures should not be interpreted as evidence that standard Manaslu itineraries are crossing two different passes. They reflect differences in mapping and measurement sources.
Why Can the Trail Line Itself Be Different?
A trekking map should not be treated like a permanent engineering drawing of the trail. In the lower Manaslu valleys especially, landslides, river erosion, bridge replacement, road construction and local trail work can alter short sections of the route used on the ground.
Sometimes the difference is temporary. A crossing may be diverted while repairs are underway and later return to the familiar trail. In other cases, improved road access can gradually change where trekking itineraries begin or where vehicles are able to meet trekkers at the end.
This is why we are cautious about describing an old GPX line as the exact Manaslu trail. It tells us where somebody walked when the track was recorded; it does not prove that every short section will remain unchanged for future departures.

The presence of those lines does not mean that every one belongs in the measured distance of the standard circuit. Some trekkers make a longer acclimatization excursion, others use a shorter option, and the resulting GPS totals will naturally differ.
The same principle applies when a regional map includes Tsum Valley or the Annapurna Circuit. Those routes connect with the wider Manaslu trekking network, but displaying them on the same map does not make them part of the standard Manaslu Circuit distance.
Which Manaslu Circuit Map Should You Trust?
We would choose a map that clearly identifies its route version and date, distinguishes driving from walking, separates optional trails from the main circuit, shows overnight elevations, and avoids presenting approximate GPS measurements as survey-level precision.
For planning our own departures, we also distinguish between information that remains relatively stable and information that needs reconfirmation. The location of Samagaun or the general direction of the Budhi Gandaki does not change from one trekking season to another, but a temporary trail diversion, damaged bridge or practical vehicle access point can.
A useful Manaslu map should therefore tell you what it is measuring and when its route information was checked. If two maps disagree, compare their starting point, finishing point, side trips, measurement method and update date before assuming that one of them must be wrong.

A tea-house symbol should therefore be read as accommodation information rather than a guarantee that one particular property will always be available.
Are permit checkpoints shown on the Manaslu Circuit map?
Some detailed maps mark administrative or permit-check locations, but not every tourist map does, and we would not choose a trekking map based on checkpoint symbols alone.
Permit checks are part of operating the trek rather than navigating between villages. For our groups, the required trekking documents are arranged before departure and carried for the relevant checks along the route, so the trekker does not need to navigate from checkpoint to checkpoint using the map.
